London councils are urging the government to act
The government is being urged to bring forward plans to help local authorities crack down on dangerous dogs.
London councils are calling for action as the problem with 'status dogs' used by gangs as weapons is growing.
In 2006 the number of dogs seized by the Metropolitan Police stood at 193, in 2010 the figure rose to 1,107.
The number of dogs destroyed went up from 27 to 563 during the same period.
Now London Councils, which represents the capital's 33 authorities, is pressing the government to bring forward promised proposals for possible changes to the law.

so more and more dogs continue to be destroyed but the problem is getting worse? gee, think maybe it's not the dog that's the true problem?!? "dangerous" dogs are almost always generally calm and loving as a given, provided they are in the right hands.
what should happen is, first of all, make breeding illegal full stop. and instead of a dog being killed (i'm tired of the euphemisms...), put him in a shelter for re-socialization, the irresponsible/ abusive person completes a jail sentence that isn't a joke(!) and the benefits they are (most likely) living on go directly to the shelter the dog went to. also, anyone who is an irresponsible or abusive dog owner should have to spend a night or two or many in a shelter themselves to see what "dangerous dogs" have to deal with all too often. AND they should have to witness a fair amount of them being "destroyed". stop tiptoeing around these morons! be as tough as they think they are!
