Vince Cable to speak at South London Business event

South London businesses are being offered access to influential coalition Business Secretary Vince Cable.

Mr Cable, Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham, will speak at the event on October 13, at the London Film Museum, Waterloo.

Tickets cost up to £145 a head.

Peter Pledger, director of South London Business, said: “Providing such a high-profile business speaker is just the sort of opportunity we look to provide to our members.

“We are delighted to be able to offer the chance to listen to Vince Cable to both members and other businesses in London and look forward to a highly entertaining and insightful evening.”

I still do not understand why we have to pay to hear these people speak. In the past it was the norm to pay to hear a great orator of the day ...but Vince is no orator and I see no reason why we have to pay to hear him say things he would say in the House of Commons or at the Party Conferences.
.
It is probably the questions we can ask him which might be worth the attendance money although it is rare to get your question selected as it might be too controversial.
.
As I cannot attend, I have one for Vince here- why did you get a 'yellow' card from the Commons authorities when submitting your latest expenses- or was Quentin Letts of 'The Daily Mail' wrong when he wrote about this matter?

i had a reasonable amount of time for vince cable until he recently spouted that a cap on immigration into this country was harmful to our economy! total poppycock!

To answer Bob Grimley. Yes, this was by far the most important issue in many wards in the Twickenham constituency during the last election- the matter was raised time and again.
.
It was only after the election that many of the candidates expressed more open opinions on the subject but I found on the doorstep that the issue was very 'live' and one which the elected politicians will ignore at their peril... especially in Cable's constituency where big majorities can collapse!

Excellent value at £145: even £5 cheaper than the cost of one of one of the roughly hewn wooden animals Sutton Council has spent for their High Street Carnival of the roughly hewn animals Spectacular.

£750 each in fact for those animals, Michael, not £150 each ... so you could go and see Mr Cable more than five times for each rustic rabbit!

Any of you "cockneys" going on that demo tomorrow then ? ;)

What demo is that Mackem; would it be a protest by the Splinter Group formed of people who tried to slide across the backs of the roughly hewn wooden High Street animals?

"South London Business" is a membership organisation by the looks of things. It's surely their business how they spend their money and organise their events.

Similarly, MPs aren't bound to the public 24x7: any MP can fulfil a speaking engagement with such an organisation, unless Mr. Taylor thinks that MPs should be banned from performing any work not explicitly approved by Parliamentary authorities. (Which might not be a bad thing, perhaps, although it might mean another load of MPs who don't want the job ...)

To answer Tim Lennon, I do not want to ban anyone from doing anything they feel they want to do... within reason, of course.
.
I just feel unhappy that MPs are charging to deliver speeches like this. I feel these speeches should be free events as if there is cost involved it penalises poor people who may wish to attend but cannot pay to do so.
.
Vince Cable has been put on a pedestal (mainly by himself) but I think he should be more accountable to the voter without us having to pay for the privilege.
.
The problem these days is that quite a few MPs do not answer letters or emails and behave somewhat differently when they get to the House of Commons by becoming rather haughty- I'm not suggesting Zac or Vince, actually do this but we, the public, should have direct access to MPs without having to cough up for it!

First, I agree with Phillip Taylor – Mr Cable is advertised as the Business Secretary, and should not charge for such events if he attends as Business Secretary.

However, to be fair to Tim Lennon, it is not clear that he IS charging - it may be that it is only South London Business which is benefiting financially.

If this is the case, then Mr Cable should not be attending in his capacity as Secretary of State, but as an individual. It would be remiss of him to charge for doing a job he is already well paid for.
