Late bloomers give Kew Gardens a blanket of colour

After a seemingly never-ending winter filled with ice and snow, spring flowers have finally found their way into bloom.

Crocuses are among the flowers creating blankets of colour in Kew Gardens this week.

Although severe weather caused a delay in flowering this year, with daffodils not making an appearance at Kew until as late as February 26, experts have told gardeners not to worry as their plants will flower at the same time instead of being spaced out.

Sandra Bell, a scientist at Kew, said: “It means there will be so much more in flower at the same time and so much colour and impact in gardens. In many ways it is a return to normal.”

Kew is looking absolutely beautiful again this spring and is a credit to the staff.

It is, however, a great shame that the local LibDems in Kew will not comment on the curent serious financial plight of the Gardens...especially as they run Richmond Council and control some of the public's money.

I hope an incoming administration at York House on 7th May will give some indication of any support for the Gardens once the elections are over. I suppose it is too much to ask for the LibDem councillors in Kew ard to tell us some of their views in these columns?

How sad that some people have to make party points even about stories like this. No woder people get turned off by politics

To answer Kingpin- the Liberals are in power here so I think it is perfectly reasonable to ask them what their views are.

It is not party political.

The Liberals
have presided over the disintegration of some of our local town centres like Twickenham and Whitton through lack of investment.

So what are they going to do with Kew? It is a simple question.

Presumably Kingpin does not realise that politics and decision making involve the allocation of money and it is the Liberals who currently hold the purse strings here. So this is not party political scoring but a genuine attempt to get some information from the ruling group on what the intentions for Kew are.

It is you, Kingpin, who are turning people off because of your statement

How does flowers turn into a rant about town centre decay? You're a Tory candidate. You want to score silly points. Don't insult our intelligence by pretrnding otherwise. If this is so important and your a candidate, will the Tories pledge money if elected? If you don't know ask your boss. And did the torys give any when they were in power. If you don't know, ask your boss councillor true.
