Police tape off riverside after 'woman assaulted'
Police taped off part of the Kingston riverside this morning after telling neighbours a woman had been assaulted.
The area around a doorway behind John Lewis, north of Kingston bridge, was blocked off with police tape stopping walkers from walking the footpath.
Andy Mott, whose boat is moored next to the crime scene, said police had told him a woman had been assaulted about 4am.
He said: "Some girl got assaulted in that doorway. There was blue tarpaulin by that grille. It was all sealed off.
"They had forensic people. They told us about 4am in the morning.
"We have been here but we never heard nothing.
"It is pretty quiet here. It is just when they come out of the clubs.
"It is terrible. I thought someone had died."
The John Lewis part of the riverside is close to numerous pubs and clubs including Essence and McCluskys.
