Police are investigating “suspicious circumstances” around a house fire in New Malden this morning.
Officers have taped off a wide area around the house and are still at the scene.
Firefighters were called to Howard Road at about 11.50am to reports of smoke emanating from a house.
Bruce Ure, 44, an IT consultant who lives opposite, said he called the fire brigade.
He said: “There was smoke coming out of the eaves and I thought ‘that’s really quite odd’ so I went outside and as soon as I did I could smell smoke.
“I bashed on the door but there was no answer so I called 999.”
Police are telling residents who want to move their cars that the cordon may still be there are at 4pm.
A Kingston police spokeswoman said: "Police were initially called to assist but there are some suspicious circumstances we are currently investigating."
