Wimbledon school fields blighted by fox mess

Foxes mess is blighting school fields in Wimbledon, it is claimed Foxes mess is blighting school fields in Wimbledon, it is claimed

Brazen foxes have little shame using school playing fields as a toilet, residents have complained, as the council claimed nothing more could be done to deter them.

Pam Rostron, a mother of two children who attend Wimbledon Chase Primary School, said staff were spending too much on clearing up fox droppings and more needed to be done to deter them from coming near children.

She said: “It seems pretty ridiculous when you have got foxes on the fields when kids are in school.

“There are companies that release them into the wild, or apparently lion dung can be used to deter them.

"I know the law protects them but we need to think of something.”

The school’s headteacher, Sue Tomes, declined to comment but her colleague confirmed she was aware of the problem and the school doing everything they could to keep the grounds clear of fox mess.

Councillor Chris Edge, a governor at the school, said the law should be changed to reclassify foxes as vermin and allow local authorities to take stronger action against them.

Coun Edge said: “We can’t shoot foxes in Merton otherwise the fox hunting lobby will come down on us like a ton of bricks, but residents are right that more needs to be done.”

But Merton Council’s cabinet member for environmental sustainability, Councillor Andrew Judge, said trapping or killing foxes was ineffective and cruel.

He said: “Foxes are attracted by food waste so to deter them, we advise people to ensure any rubbish waiting for collection is properly contained.

“We will be rolling out the final stage of our food waste programme later this year which provides residents with lockable plastic food waste bins for the outside of their properties which means there is less food waste around to attract the foxes.”

"There are companies that release them into the wild"
So that would be capturing them ... and releasing them in the same place???

And Councillor Chris Edge sounds like an uneducated thug. How did a prat like him become a governor?

Seriously? It's just a bit of fox poo!

When I was at school it was normal to have foxes, seagulls (bird poo!), rabbits (bunny poo!) and other wildlife wandering in the playing field. It was a good thing. Once, a cow from the nearby farm managed to get in.

Having a little patch of nature to play on made up for the M25 being right next to our school. Then of course one day they stopped us going on the playing field (to protect the wildlife), and after that we had to play in the car park...

I have never heard anything more ludicrous than the said Councillor Chris Edge, who also happens to be the school govenor, making an issue out of foxes and their poo ! What has the world come too ! If that's all he and his associates have to rant about, they are very lucky individuals. So the mother of one of the pupils says 'more should be done' to 'deter' foxes coming near children ? I think that comment says more about her being a member of the gullible, commom herd, than it does about anything else. Where's the proof that foxes are a danger to kids ? And please don't mention accusations made by individuals to the press, without a shred of evidence to prove what they are saying is true. Anyone celebral knows family pets are more likey to be the culprit, with the fox being used as a scapegoat. Don't be led astray by the media and pro-hunters, people. Wake up and smell the coffee.

I have read some crap in the paper in my time but this takes the mickey are these people for real, a fox is a wild animal which will wander wherever it pleases, understandably it is an inconvenience if your child treads in fox poo or gets it on their clothing....DO YOU NOT OWN A WASHING MACHINE!!!! CAN YOU NOT REMOVE THE POO FROM THE SHOE!! I feel that people need a reality check as I swear most people live on another planet when it comes to common sense. People should worry about things that really matter like educating our kids and lowering the crime rate. Stop blaming the foxes for everything....... jeez Louise Get a flipping life!!!
