Tube strike set to cause travel problems

5:01pm Monday 6th September 2010

Tube passengers are facing lengthy travel delays as the first in a series of planned strikes gets underway.

Commuters have been advised to find alternative methods of getting home as Underground workers launched the first of their strikes at 5pm.

Maintenance workers downed tools at 5pm, with signal and station staff set to strike from 9pm.

The strikes are a reaction to plans to scrap 800 jobs in ticket offices, although Transport for London (TfL) claims the changes will not effect passenger security or safety.

Meanwhile, an extra 100 buses and 10,000 more passenger journeys on the Thames riverboat services are also being laid on.

However, commuters are also being warned to expect delays in the morning while the strikes continue.
