Babar Ahmad's "inside man" faces 25 years in US jail

The man described as the inside man for Tooting terror suspect Babar Ahmad has been convicted at a US court of spying and supplying al-Qa'eda websites.

Former US navy sailor Hassan Abujihaad, 32, was found guilty of passing diagrams and movements of US navy ships to Azzam.com.

Babar Ahmad is accused of running the Azzam organisation, which allegedly promoted violent jihad, between 1997 and 2002.

Police said they found a disc containing secret information about the movements of a US Navy battle group from California to the Middle East at Mr Ahmad's Tooting home when they arrested him in 2003.

Mr Abujihaad used his security clearance to email diagrams of ships and their susceptibility to attack to the Azzam website, a Connecticut court heard.

He faces 25 years in jail for providing material support to terrorists and disclosing secret national defence information.

His lawyers said they were likely to appeal the conviction.

Mr Ahmad is wanted in America on terror charges. He has been held in prison for more than three years, and is awaiting a House of Lords decision on his appeal against extradition.

He has never been charged under British law.
