A group of musicians from Sutton and Croydon have reached the final of a new television show dubbed the anti-X Factor.
Chakula Soul, who all attend the Brit School in Croydon, wowed Sky One’s Must Be The Music judges Dizzee Rascal, Jamie Cullum and former Texas singer Sharlene Spiteri on Saturday to reach September’s Wembley Arena final.
The band, who won their semi-final on Saturday, cite R&B stars D’Angelo and Angie Stone as their influences and believe they have a chance of winning this month’s final.
Drummer Max Couglan, from Worcester Park, said: “Chakula Soul is an eight-piece who play a blend of funk and soul. We all go to The Brit School, a performing arts school in Croydon, and this is the biggest opportunity of our lives.”
The judges were mightily impressed with the south London eight-piece who performed songs written by themselves.
Jamie Cullum, who said: “This is why I did this competition to meet people like you. It was amazing. Sheer musicianship and belief in whatever you were doing.
Fellow judge Dizzee Rascal said the band sounded “like they had been playing together for years”.
