Reckless drivers risk lives at Sutton road works

Police have increased patrols at at road works site in Sutton after careless drivers were spotted risking lives by jumping lights.

The 150-year-old London Road Bridge is currently being replaced in a £4m scheme funded by Transport for London.

Council contractors are operating an alternate one-way system controlled by temporary traffic lights across the bridge.

However, a council spokesman said a minority of “irresponsible motorists” are ignoring the lights and have narrowly avoided major accidents.

He said police have increased patrols in the area and have vowed to take appropriate enforcement action if they witness anyone driving dangerously.

Executive member for Environment on Sutton Council, Councillor Colin Hall, said: “This is essential repair work that will improve access to and from Hackbridge and we do apologise to residents and motorists for any disruption caused.

“However, that is no excuse for the ridiculous driving of a minority of drivers who are putting lives at risk to save a minute or two on their journeys.

“We have asked the police to step up enforcement in the area.

"I appeal to motorists to please be patient and warn those that break the law that they risk a hefty punishment.”

I seriously hope that these patrols extend to the junction of London road/Senga Road where we are having to witness these impatient drivers on a daily basis. Unable to wait the few extra minutes they are using the wrong side of the road to cut down Senga Road, often meeting cars head on, and ignoring the 20mph speed limit. How long before we see a serious accident at this junction which is very busy at peak times with school children attempting to cross the road?

Whilst I welcome the action taken by the council and the police, I wonder how effective they will be as police patrols will not be 24/7. I very much sympathise with the Senga Road householder, and wonder what can be done there.

I should very much like to see cameras put up either side of the bridge. I understand that there have to be 5 fatal accidents in order for this to happen. If they are not put there, I fear fatalities are not going to be far away.

The other deeply annoying, potentially dangerous occurrence, are drivers playing their music ridiculously loudly. I live on London Road and sometimes I can feel the vibrations through the floor in my sitting room when a car is parked outside. There is no way these selfish drivers could hear the siren of an emergency vehicle. At 3am this morning we were woken by the loud music in the car parked outside our house. Tempers will become increasingly frayed as the works continue, especially during the summer months when our windows, as well as the drivers windows, will be open.

if the work is that urgent why are the workforce gone so early & not working weekends; drivers play the normal game in traffic queues of spot the workmen..

I have to disagree with bed-corner-man regarding Birse's workforce.

They are working today, Saturday. They are also at work by 7.30am and are still working when I get home at 4.30pm
