Pupils at an Esher school have returned from a school trip infected with scabies.
Year five children at Claremont Fan Court School spent the Easter holidays at a residence in Hindleap Warren in Sussex.
After they returned home, some of the nine to 10-year-olds had evidence of bug bites and some were also diagnosed with scabies, another parasite infestation.
Scabies is a skin condition caused by a mite causing an itchy red rash.
Claremont Fan Court said it had sought medical advice and arranged for a community nurse to be at school yesterday, so parents could have their children examined.
A spokesman for the school said that once a person had been treated for the condition they were no longer contagious.
She said: “We sincerely regret that some of our families have had to deal with this problem.
"Claremont Fan Court School has had links with Hindleap Warren for over 10 years with very successful trips.
"Certainly when we sent our children off we expected the same happy experience.
"We know this has been a great inconvenience, at the very least, for our families involved, and we deeply regret that this has happened.
“The school is liaising closely with parents to minimize any further consequences of this unfortunate incident and are very grateful for their patience whilst we have been dealing with the situation in a way that minimises disruption to the children’s education.”
The school has not said how many children have got scabies.
