More than 300 residents had to be evacuated from their homes last night after a gas leak in Battersea.

Battersea fire station were called by the National Grid at 6.20pm last night to reports of a gas leak in Ingrave Street.

A decision was taken that homes nearby needed to be evacuated and residents spent five hours in a local community centre while the problem was dealt with.

Roy Adams, watch manager at Battersea fire station said there were 15 firefighters at the scene assisting with the evacuation and ensuring they had equipment prepared in case the gas ignited.

He said: On the whole the residents were in good spirits. They all realised there was a problem and were very co-operative with us and the police.”

Mr Adams said residents were allowed back into their houses at 11.30pm.
