Astonished parents and pupils at a Chessington school fair were treated to a surprise visit from pop star and former I’m a Celebrity contestant, Cerys Matthews today.
The former Catatonia singer opened the Chessington Community College Christmas Fair after being contacted by a parent.
Penny Binstead met the rocker a year ago at a charity award event where her son, Jack Binstead, 12, was recognised for his bravery in overcoming brittle bone disease and achieving excellence as a wheel chair athlete.
“I spent most of my day with the whole Binstead family and we just really got on, so we stayed in touch,” said Cerys who starred in last year's series of I'm A Celebrity.
“I’ve got children of my own and I love to support communities so it’s great to be at an event like this where so many families can get together.”
Headteacher, David Kemp, said: “I’m so grateful that Cerys gave time on a Sunday to come along and open the fair. And when the new school building opens I’m hoping she might even come back to sing.”
He added: “We’re absolutely delighted that we have had an event like this in the school’s new atrium, and really pleased that so many different members of the community have come down to show their support.”
