The body of a woman was found on the railway tracks close to Epsom Station yesterday.
About 7.30am yesterday, the driver of the 6.12am Southern train from Selhurst Depot to Leatherhead stopped at Epsom station after seeing something on the track.
Officers from the British Transport Police were called to the scene at 7.30am and paramedics from the Surrey Ambulance Service also attended.
According to the ambulance service the person was dead on arrival.
Southern and South West Trains services via Epsom were suspended while the police worked on the scene and the railway line was handed back to Network Rail at 1.55pm.
A spokesman for Southern Railway said: “The electric current in the area was turned off shortly after the discovery and taxis were provided for passengers until a rail replacement bus service was put in place between Sutton and Dorking via Epsom and Sutton and Box Hill and Westhumble.”
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "BTP is investigating after the body of a woman was found on the tracks near to Epsom railway station yesterday, Sunday, November 23.
“The incident is currently being treated as unexplained.”
