Libraries and museums will become pop-up tourist information points for the 2012 Games, to help cater for the influx of tourists.
The move was inspired by the pop-up phenomenon, which has seen temporary restaurants and retail stores appear in homes, businesses and street corners across the world.
Surrey County Council has already started training library and museum workers on all things Games-related and staff have been tasked with researching local attractions.
Councillor Denise Saliagopoulos said: “The Games provide a fantastic opportunity to stimulate Surrey’s economy.
“More than a million people are expected to visit when the cycle road races, time trial and Olympic torch relay come to the county this summer.
“The pop-up tourist information centres are an innovative way to provide visitors with information on everything from major attractions to great places to eat and shop.
“They will also provide information about Olympic events and venues and there will be takeaway maps promoting local businesses to help Surrey firms make the most of the Games.”
