Gritters in Surrey covered the distance of London to Cape Town over the weekend, as they worked to keep the county’s roads safe.
The council’s gritting lorries treated almost 6,500 miles of roads and used about 1,500 tonnes of salt.
Workers had 17,000 tonnes of salt to draw upon – 30 per cent more than last year – which was good news considering more snow is expected to fall tonight.
