Tonnes of grit used to clear roads
More than 600 tonnes of grit was used as officers worked through the night to combat freezing conditions, snow and ice.
Croydon Council’s nine gritting lorries worked continuously from 2pm Saturday February 4 through to the end of Sunday spreading the anti-ice grit on roads and footpaths across Croydon.
This followed on from pre-treating work on priority roads carried out on Thursday and Friday February 2 and 3.
The lorries were manned by 40 members of staff with a further 116 on footpath clearing duties.
In total 614.14 tonnes of grit was spread between Thursday and Monday, with 68 tonnes used on footpaths.
A spokesman for the council said: “Calling on the experience of previous years, the council had stockpiled sufficient grit to deal with heavy snowfalls and has enough in stock to deal with further falls.
“The weather situation is continuously monitored and, should forecasts indicate that further gritting is required, the lorries will be sent out.”
