A petition of almost 1,500 signatures calling for restoration of a Croydon cinema has been handed to the council.
Campaigners hoping to save the David Lean Cinema, formerly in the Clocktower building, Katharine Street, presented the petition at full council in the Town Hall on Monday January 30.
Sporting badges calling for the saving of the cinema, supporters in the public gallery let out a cheer when the document, containing 1428 signatures, was handed in by Councillor Maggie Mansell.
Campaign chairman Adrian Winchester said: “When we started the petition in June last year, it was impossible to anticipate the response, so we are delighted that it has attracted so much support.”
The David Lean Cinema was a 68 seat venue which opened in 1995.
It was closed in April 2011 with cinema viewings moved to nearby Fairfield Halls.
