Blackheath Bluecoat School praised for GCSE improvements - but still faces axe
A SCHOOL has been named as one of the best in the country for improving its pupils' GCSE results - but it is still being shutdown.
According to The Schools Network, a charity which provides support in raising standards, Blackheath Bluecoat is in the top 10 per cent nationwide for the speed of its improved results.
But despite its progress, Greenwich Council's cabinet has decided the school should be closed in 2014 due to its mounting financial deficit.
Chief executive Sue Williamson said: "The school is one of the best in the country at outperforming expectations for their pupils and improving their future prospects. There is plenty that other schools could learn from Blackheath Bluecoat School’s success."
Executive headteacher Jeffrey Risbridger said: "This makes the fact that the school will be closed even more poignant. It's clear evidence of what might have been possible if only we'd been given more time."
