WOOLWICH: Extra repairs to foot tunnel keep it closed to public

EXTRA repairs are needed to one of Greenwich’s foot tunnels keeping it closed to the public.
Greenwich Council’s refurbishment of the 100-year-old Greenwich and Woolwich tunnels will see the installation of new lifts, refurbished stairways, improved security, lighting and structural repairs.
But Woolwich foot tunnel is likely to remain closed to the public until March next year after contractors carrying out the renewal programme found corrosion on some of the stairs.
Pedestrians and cyclists wishing to cross the river can use the Woolwich ferry during the day and the DLR.
The Greenwich tunnel is open during the day and will only close from 9pm to 6am on weeknights.
Funding for the £11.5m project has come from central government’s community infrastructure fund.
