CATFORD: Lewisham Council buys Catford Shopping Centre for £11.52m

Lewisham Council has finalised the purchase of Catford Shopping Centre for £11.52m.

Regeneration company St Modwen, which has owned the shopping centre since 1993, has agreed to sell it to the council, which will run the centre through a wholly-owned company called the Catford Regeneration Partnership Limited.

Council chiefs claim buying the centre will improve regeneration of the area.

Deputy Mayor of Lewisham Councillor Heidi Alexander said: “The council's vision for Catford is as a lively, attractive town centre.

“Buying these land interests in the Catford centre is a once in a lifetime opportunity that puts the council in a much, much stronger position to shape the future of Catford.”

St Modwen senior development manager Killian Morris said: “Shopping centres across the country have suffered in the downturn, but Catford is one of the few that can claim 100 per cent occupancy.”

Public money being used for private enterprise? Will the public see any of the profits should there be any?
.
(Don't make me laugh)

maybe instead of the council wasting money on stupid things such as regenerating the town centre in catford which a)dont need regeneration and b)is still thriving then changing it would be a pointless effort for everyone involved.
the money should be put into improving the housing in the area as the council would rather see a pregnant women on the streets then house them as a member of the housig list for the last 6 years i think it is absolutley disgusting the way the council treat people. it is discriminating and disgusting .

deptford born and bred - Milford Towers, pretty much the worst housing in the borough, is being bought by the Council as part of the Catford Centre so it can be knocked down and improved.

regardless of whether they knock down milford towers it still willnot improve the area as the same people will go back into the flats once they have been improved leaving people still homeless and people still with no decent homes i think it is time that the council made a list of prioritys and made sure which ones should be at the top the only reason milford towers is so bad is because the council give them to everyone knowing they are that desperate if it was a choice between my life and a decent house i think my life would have it
