BROMEY Police’s Cadets have scooped an award while raising money for charity.
Bromley Police’s Cadets won the award for completing a 13.1mile walk in an imaginative way to raise money for St Dunstans, the charity for blind ex-servicemen and women.
The group decided to do the walk across the Somme battlefield in full uniform while carrying the Bromley Volunteer Police Cadet colours.
They visited 13 Commonwealth war cemeteries along the route, paying homage to the fallen at each one with a salute and flag dip.
At least four cadets were blindfolded at all time and they walked with hands on shoulders of the person in front, just as blinded gas victims were led off the battlefields during World War One.
They were accompanied by three blind ex-servicemen.
Head of Bromley Police’s Volunteer Police Cadets PC Neill Tully said: “The cadets should be very proud of their award, what they achieved during the expedition, and the money they raised.”
The St Dunstans Go the Distance Cadet and Youth Challenge was established in 2004 to help create awareness of the support services provided by the charity.
