THE transformation of an old dock in North-East coastal town into a vibrant new marina is gathering pace, with the first tenant for new retail units being welcomed today (Thursday, March 7).
Mark Milroy has signed his lease and will shortly begin work fitting out a unit in the Waterside development to house The Lookout coffee shop, at the old North Dock, in Seaham, County Durham.
To celebrate the event, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for economic regeneration, Councillor Neil Foster, along with local councillors, officially welcomed Mr Milroy today.
It is the latest step in the multi-million pound rejuvenation of the North Dock being carried out by the county council and the Seaham Harbour Dock Company.
As well as the retail units, the work has also seen the installation of pontoons, new dock gates, improvements made to the entrance on North Terrace and the refurbishment of the lifeboat house.
Coun Foster said: “We’re delighted to welcome Mr Milroy as our first tenant and encourage other businesses to join him in renting a unit at the marina.
“The regeneration of the area has brought about significant improvements and the new marina will be a stunning focal point for local residents, businesses and visitors alike.”
All units are around 500 sq ft and are available for £10 per square foot. Berths are available at a cost of £180 per metre.
The marina has berths for up to 77 boats and the new Waterside development will accommodate 11 businesses.
