Met set up Lewisham and Greenwich task forces as part of gang crime crackdown

Gang members targeted in Met Police crackdown Gang members targeted in Met Police crackdown

TASK forces are being set up in Lewisham and Greenwich to deal with local gang crime as Scotland Yard begins a renewed crackdown on the problem.

As part of this crackdown the Met will be targeting dozens of suspected gang members in a series of co-ordinated operations across London today (February 8).

Hundreds of Metropolitan Police officers will take to the streets of the capital to track down and arrest suspected gang members believed to be involved in crimes including assault, robbery and drugs supply.

The major operation, spearheaded by the Met's newly-formed Trident Gang Crime Command, marks what senior officers have described as a "step change" in the way the force tackles gangs.

Scotland Yard revealed it has now committed 1,000 dedicated officers to fighting the problem, with the creation of the central Trident gang command and 19 new task forces to deal with local gang crime in problem boroughs across London.

Operation Trident was originally set up in 2000 to tackle gun crime in black communities across the capital and has gradually grown over the past decade.

Under the unit's expanded new remit it will retain the responsibility of investigating shootings, but also work alongside the borough task forces to proactively tackle gang crime, the Met said.

It will also have access to specialist resources including Operation Connect - the MPS unit set up to tackle violence driven by gang culture - and the Serious and Organised Crime Command.

MPS Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe said: "This is a step change in how we tackle gang crime in London.

“It will allow us to identify and relentlessly pursue the most harmful gangs and gang members.

“It will help us identify young people on the periphery of gangs and work with partners to divert them away.

“Although we are now nearly doubling the number of officers dedicated to tackling gang crime, the police can not do this alone.

“It is vital we work with the public, local authorities, charities and other agencies to prevent young people from joining gangs in the first place."

There are an estimated 250 active criminal gangs in London, comprising of about 4,800 people, mostly aged between 18 and 24, according to police statistics.

Of these gangs, 62 are considered as "high harm" and commit two thirds of all gang-related crime, the Met said.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said tackling gangs was the top crime priority for London. "We've been attacking gangs from all angles.

“Now the Met has a concerted and determined push to take out the ring-leaders and tempt impressionable youngsters away from this destructive life," he added.

Even if I did, who are you ? Why do you want to make contact? Why just ask in this news report? It's a little random.

The government should just build a great big human safari park for the scum to roam free in it with knives and guns etc. They will either need to learn to get on with others or just kill each other.
If one group kills off another group they would be left with nothing to do and wonder what it is all for and most likely start killing each other.

Either way its a win win for society.

There isnt any deterrent for it at present and i cant see an effective one either on the horizon until we deal with them with drastic measures.

Bullets are cheap, perhaps just shooting them when convicted would help, cant reoffend if dead and they seem to be on a mission to kill others or themselves anyway, lets just speed up the process.

Half of London's shootings 1 one i 7 rapes can be attributed to these "gangs" they are also behind a 25% of violent crime ( source : Daily Mail )
Along with : Stats : 84% are under 24 and 2 thirds are black males ,also ,Met police are linking up with Uk border agency to deport ( Ahem!!! ) any foreign gang member !!!
But fair play to the Met police new top brass ,the London public are getting fairly fed up with thse gangs now !!!

Unfortunately most of the gang members were born here, so they are British. Even some of the Eastern European gangs that operate in London come from countries that are now in the EU, so they cannot be deported. Even if they are from outside the EU or are not British citizens, they will never get deported, as the do gooding idiots in this country say that it might infringe their human rights.

Something radical needs to be done, someone in Government needs the balls to stand up and say enough is enough, this scum will be taken off the street and locked up. If they have to build more prisons it's money well spent. How about putting HMS Ark Royal or other such redundant ships in the English Channel and having prison ships, that would sort out the overcrowding.

I've lost all confidence in the political three part system in this country.. none of them do anything once elected because basically very few mp,s are ever victims of crime because they dont put them selves at risk by moving around on public transport or are ever seen walking through areas where these gangs operate and their children go to private schools and are driven to and from school
