ONGAR: Town traders look to boost weekly market

EFFORTS are being made to boost the weekly Ongar market.

Leaflets have been printed and voluntary organisations are being encouraged to have a stall to publicise their activities.

The Ongar Town Forum - which consists of local businesses and local people - has taken over the running of the market, held in the Pleasance car park on Wednesdays.

The forum has stepped in after the market went into a downward spiral with fewer and fewer traders turning out.

Town Forum chairman Ian Goodman, who is the landlord of the Cock Tavern, in Ongar High Street, told Monday's annual town meeting: "It's not the most successful market but we are in the process of trying to build it up.

"We have had leaflets printed and circulated to all the stallholders on other local markets on other days of the week to try and encourage them to come and rent a stall at a reduced rate."

A beer festival could be returning to Ongar after an eight-year absence.

Ongar Town Forum, which intends to sponsor transport for the festival, has met with CAMRA real ale groups and the Budworth Hall, which could host the event.

Mr Goodman said: "We're hopeful we can resurrect the Ongar Beer Festival in the near future. We're hoping that next year we will have a beer festival back in Ongar."
