ONGAR: Concern over "temporary" bridge time extension

A BRIDGE built as a temporary measure at least five years ago is set to remain in use for at least another five years.

But just how long is "temporary" was the question raised by Ongar town councillors when they discussed a planning application for the structure at Langford Bridge, on Brentwood Road (the A128).

The prospect of the bridge, over the River Roding, being in use for a longer period has sparked concerns among councillors.

The planning application, submitted to Brentwood Borough Council, is seeking permission for the diversion bridge, close to the garden centre, to continue to be used until July 2013.

The bridge was installed because the original structure was considered unable to take the weight of heavy lorries.

Council vice-chairman Keith Tait told last night's town council meeting: "This is the bridge that they said would be replaced within five years in 2003."

Councillor Nigel Main said: "I think we should ask them about replacing the bridge. It's a tight bend, it's unsightly. It's not reasonable to extend it by another five years. If it is still roadworthy (in 2013) it will then be another five years (that could be sought."
