A PRISON van driver and his colleague were taken to hospital with minor injuries after the vehicle crashed off the A414 near Ongar.

The Leyland DAF left the A414, near the Blake Hall Road junction at Bobbingworth, and clipped road signs as it mounted a grass verge at about 8.30am yesterday (Wednesday).

A concerned motorist, who realised what the vehicle was, contacted the Guardian to report the crash but it was later confirmed there were no prisoners onboard.

Police were called to stagger the rush-hour traffic for about an hour as the damaged van was put back on the road and towed away for repair.

The vehicle is owned by GSL, a specialist firm commissioned by the Home Office to transport hundreds of thousands of prisoners a year between prisons, and to and from court.

John Bates, director of corperate communciations for GSL, said: "One of our cell vans left the road in order to avoid a collision with another vehicle. Two of our crew members were assessed at a local hospital and later released."

He added: "It was empty. At that time of the morning the van would have been on its way to pick up some prisoners, although I cannot tell you what its planned route was for the day."

An Essex Police spokesman said officers were sent to the scene to assist following reports of a collision involving a van and potentially another vehicle.

He said enquires into the crash are ongoing.
