ONGAR: Diners soaked after roof theft
Smiths Brasserie owner Mike Taverner outside the restaurant
Smiths Brasserie owner Mike Taverner outside the restaurant

DINERS at a popular fish restaurant got a soaking when water started coming through the ceiling after thieves stole lead from the roof.

The owner of Smith's Brasserie, in Fyfield Road, Ongar, had no idea he was a victim of crime until it started raining.

But the downpour caused "havoc" in the restaurant as water poured onto customers on Saturday evening.

Thieves had stripped the lead from the roof of the building, causing £7,000 damage.

Owner Mike Taverner said: "It started raining and it was flowing through the roof. It was unbelievable and caused havoc in the restaurant.

"There was one man on his wedding anniversary and his wife got dirty water all over her. We had to move about 15 to 20 customers."

Mr Taverner had to close half of the restaurant, which is a popular venue for celebrities including David Beckham and his family, while builders came in to replace the lead with zinc.

But it seems the crime is part of a more serious national problem.

Thousands of properties have been targeted across the UK by organised gangs who sell the metal on to dealers.

Countries such as India, China and Dubai are struggling to find enough materials to keep their building industries supplied and dealers are shipping over the scrap metal after melting it down.

Police crime reduction officer Tony Ellis advised people to be on their guard.

He said: "It's a national problem. We recommend that people put grease paint on to make it difficult to handle. Or if they are unlucky enough to have it stolen never replace it with lead again, use something cheaper."

High Ongar Primary School, Ongar Leisure Centre and Loughton Library have been targeted in recent months.

Mr Taverner said he is now going to install CCTV cameras at the restaurant.

He added: "I never wanted to do that but I'm going to have to put in an alarm system as well. It used to be an old crime but recently I've heard a lot of local people talking about it. "I think it's something the community should be aware of."

There is a proven solution to this nationwide problem and I thought your readers might like to read the story below on 'Lead Theft' and how a roofing firm fought back against the criminals.

Roofing Firm Fights Back Against Lead Theft

THE theft of lead from roofs of public buildings such as churches, schools and council buildings has been a major problem in areas throughout the UK.

However, Selectamark’s latest product SelectaDNA Grease has been acting as a very efficient deterrent to thieves, who can earn anything up to £800 per tonne for dealing in stolen scrap lead.

Dave McGrath who runs DPM Leadwork Ltd, a lead roofing company in Farnham, Surrey, has been using the new forensic grease on any roofs he has installed in recent months and he is very pleased with how effective the product has been and how easy it is to use.

SelectaDNA Grease can be painted onto any lead roofing, zinc metal or copper piping. Once a thief handles the metal, the grease transfers onto their hands and clothing. The criminal is then irrefutably linked to the crime scene. The grease is almost impossible to remove, and contains both a UV tracer and a unique DNA code.

Mr McGrath said: “We specialise in lead roofing, so this product is very interesting to us. I have been very impressed by the product, which is simple to use and does what is says it will.

“Our clients have also been very pleased with us, as they feel they are getting an added service when we lay a new lead roof for them and then offer to protect it from thieves with SelectaDNA Grease.”

DPM Leadwork have also been kept busy recently replacing lead roofs on school buildings.

Lead theft from schools can cause massive inconvenience, with lessons often disrupted. If part of a school roof is stolen it could make the building unsafe and means it could leak if it rains. If this happens, the school would have to be closed until the problem is fixed.

Mr McGrath said: “We recently laid a new lead roof at a private school in Cranleigh, Surrey, which cost £12,000.

We applied the forensic grease to the roof afterwards in order to deter thieves from targeting the school again. We have also put up warning signs within the school grounds as an added deterrent.”

He continued: “Another property we have worked on recently was a residential home in Godalming, Surrey, where the owners were very pleased for the added protection when we laid a new £4,000 roof for them and painted the grease on it afterwards. In the same village, the vicar at the local church hadn’t even noticed that the lead roofing had been taken until it started to rain and the roof leaked! We have since fixed that one too.”

In the exclusive Wentworth area, home to the famous golf course, DPM Leadwork was called recently to an impressive residential property which had been fitted with a new lead roof by another company - and by midnight on the same day part of it had been stolen again…

Mr McGrath said: “We came in and laid a large 15-tonne roof on the property and have now protected it with SelectaDNA Grease so the thieves will not want to come near it again. The owners were extremely happy to have that added security in place.”
