ONGAR: MP welcomes £6m health centre proposals

PROPOSALS for a £6million health centre on the site of the Ongar and District War Memorial Hospital are being welcomed by MP Eric Pickles.

West Essex Primary Care Trust is preparing to consult on its plans for the Fyfield Road site which would see the site developed with premises accommodating both the town's doctors' practices and a host of other health services.

Mr Pickles said: "Many years ago I successfully campaigned in partnership with the people of Ongar, led by Sheila Jackman, who is chairman of the Ongar and District Healthcare League of Friends, to keep Ongar War Memorial Hospital open as a healthcare facility for local people.

"Today that decision has been vindicated once again with the announcement by West Essex PCT that it needs to improve facilities available at the hospital because it is not possible to expand the current GP surgeries to provide the services required in the modern National Health Service."

Services which could be provided at the new health centre - which would keep the war memorial name - include minor surgery, family planning, cardiac and chest rehabilitation, phlebotomy, ultra-sound and ECG as well as preventative health care services such as stop smoking services."

As part of the proposals the in-patient beds would move to the new St Margaret's Hospital, in Epping.

Mr Pickles said: "The £6m investment would mean that modern health care facilities would be available for the people of Ongar and the surrounding villages.

"I'm keen to hear from local residents as well as health care professionals working in the area to find out their views on the proposals and also to discover if there are other services that should be incorporated in to the new health centre.

"Such comments can be sent to me by email to picklese@parliament.uk."

Pickles knows his onions, as well as his eggs and herrings.
