ONGAR: Armed robbers target couple in their home
MASKED raiders fled with thousands of pounds worth of jewellery after threatening a couple at gunpoint.
The husband was hit in the face with a knuckle-duster by one of the gang who forced their way into the couple's home near Ongar.
The three robbers fled with a haul of jewellery, including a £14,000 men's Rolex watch and a pair of diamond earrings.
Police said the men forced their way into the property in Toot Hill Road, Greensted, when the man answered the door shortly before 8.30pm last night (Wednesday).
One of the robbers was carrying a small handgun which was used to threaten the couple, who are in their 50s.
One of the gang also hit the man while wearing what was thought to have been a knuckle-duster causing a black eye. No other injuries were sustained and the firearm was not discharged.
Detective Sergeant Kev Shannon, who is leading the investigation, said: "They're shaken but physically uninjured but obviously shaken by the fact that three masked men were in their house."
The men stole three jewellery boxes and are believed to have driven off in a vehicle towards the A414.
The three men were in their late teens to early 20s and of medium build. All were wearing balaclavas. One is thought to be white, another black and the gunman Asian.
The police helicopter was called out to help search the area.
Officers on foot carried out an extensive search and found some items of jewellery in the Toot Hill Road area.
Any witnesses or anyone with any information should ring Epping CID on 01279 625443 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
