Forecaster: Snow tonight will settle and remain for days

SNOW is coming tonight and is expected to settle and remain on the ground for the next few days, a forecaster warned this morning.

Bucks residents could be waking up on Sunday to as much as five inches of the white stuff, according to Hazlemere based weatherman Jim Dale.

Chesham was the joint coldest place in country minus 11 degrees Celsius last night and while temperatures are set to rise, it will not be warm enough to melt fallen snow, he said.

Mr Dale from British Weather Services told the BFP: “Overnight it will snow, we're expecting four or five inches on the ground by morning, there'll obviously be differences place to place.

“Then it will be moving away by morning so when people get up everything will be over and it will all be on the ground.”

He said residents will see snow fall tonight before they go to bed.

“People going out tonight need to be aware,” the independent forecaster said.

“From now on it's downhill as far as difficulties with roads and travelling are concerned.”

Temperatures will be hovering around freezing, keeping the ground cold enough for ice and snow to remain for the coming days.

“We are on the way up now but ground temperatures won't rise sufficiently, they are substantially low enough at the moment,” Mr Dale explained.

“It won't be as cold but it will be cold enough to retain the snow on the ground where it hasn't been treated.”

He said this will be the case through Monday and Tuesday.

Are you better prepared to deal with the snow than the last time Britain had a cold snap?

Maybe we could get Pete's Dragon to melt it all.

Jim Dale, "Carry on weather forecasting."
I will eat my hat if we have the predicted 4" to 5" snow. It won't happen, trust me.

It started snowing in South Wales at 11am Saturday and is expected to stop snowing there around 11pm. That same band of snow is heading east which is what we'll get later on Saturday evening. We'll get a few inches and it will still be on the ground Monday/Tuesday. But, i fully expect roads to be clear for Monday because our local authorities have had (as have we) several days notice of this forthcoming weather. If they aren't clear, then 'incompetence' might spring to mind.

I think people are confusing Jim Dale with the comedy actor. This Jim Dale is a senior meteorologist and is the founder member of the British Weather Services.

I'd say the deliberate comparisons to the comedian are due to his comedy forecasts......

It might snow but it might not, it might be cold but don't bet on it etc etc

Sorry, but I only trust Met Office forecasts.

Light but consistent snowfall started over an hour ago in High Wycombe. Met office predicted correctly and they now reckon heavy snow starting at 9pm and carrying on through the night.

The local authorities have had significant notice though we must realise that there is only so much they can do when it is snowing heavily.

I reckon we will face significant disruption on Sunday and maybe Monday but we'll see.

What a lot of people don't know is that actually the Met office collate their information using the local weathermen!!!

So providing the right equipment was being used then our local man would be as reliable as the Met Office if not more.

I used to work for the Met Office. Local information is gathered during & after the event. Local 'data collectors' do not produce forecasts. There is a large computer and a team of meteoroligists in Exeter analysing data from all over the world to produce a UK forecast. Of course a local forecaster can access the same data as the Met Office & make their own forecast, but there really is little point other than for a hobby.
