Final Hazlemere, High Wycombe track plans released for Sir William Ramsay School

RESIDENTS can now have their say on controversial final plans to move an athletics track to Hazlemere.

Wycombe District Council has submitted a planning application for the eight-lane track, other athletics facilities and pavilion for Sir William Ramsay School.

The council wants to move the track from Wycombe Sports Centre, Handy Cross to make way for a coach station and re-located park and ride facility.

Most residents who responded to a council consultation opposed early plans over fears about traffic, noise, lighting and the affect on wildlife.

This led to the removal of proposed spectator seating, lower level lighting and the moving of the pavilion to near the school instead of houses.

But Brian Mapletoft of Hazlemere Residents’ Association said homeowners were unimpressed with the changes.

He said: “It is dreadful that after such an outcry that they are going ahead with a discredited scheme with merely cosmetic adjustments.”

The plans had “done nothing” to alter the track size, he said, and it would be better sited at Queensway, Amersham Road, where WDC is to create allotments.

Hazlemere Parish Council also objects. It told the council: “The track would create an overdevelopment of a well established residential area.”

The plans – to be decided by WDC’s planning committee – said lighting will be “state of the art” and spill would be “virtually eliminated”.

The council – which is not responsible for roads or transport - said it would “promote” alternatives to car use.

The detailed plans (see link, bottom of story) says: “The proposal seeks to provide a safe, convenient and attractive access on foot and by cycle.”

It says “most” of the hedgerow will be kept and eight trees will be removed and replaced.

There will be 48 cycling stands and spaces for 61 cars, seven coaches, nine mini-buses and eight disabled drivers.

As well as the eight-lane 400m track, the facility will also include triple jump, pole-vault, javelin and high-jump fan.

The pavilion includes changing and shower facilities, kitchen, first aid room and storage room.

The “simplicity” of the pavilion’s design will “add to the character of the environment” the council says. It would be used to 8.30pm.

The council looked at 11 sites before settling on the school. It gave out 1,250 leaflets during a six week consultation in August and September.

Some residents were angry at the timing of the consultation as some householders were on holiday.

Great facility for local residents. They will have a local school they can be really proud of.
Don't let the Nimbys win write in and support this application.

When will WDC listen to what people want.
Seems we have WDC Tories ignoring local people again.

They offer consultations and ignore the findings !!

Must be a quick £££ in it for WDC or they wouldnt be doing it

public transport around Hazlemere is dire how are the council going to promote alternatives to car use when people are coming from miles away how are they going to get there without a car, we dont even have a park and ride!! all very well to comment Yog when the track isnt being built in your back garden

I disagree about public transport in Hazlemere. We have a bus every 15 minutes in the day, 30 minutes in the evening, which stops right outside Ramsay. Some of the kids will be brought in cars by parents, who generally don't wait around, while any adults will have sufficient parking.
By the way, I live 30 seconds walk from Ramsay, so you might say it's in my back garden.
Oh, and as a Parish councillor, I do not object to the plan. However, the majority of councillors do object, and democracy rules here.

So, you get buses every 15mins and a proposed development to increase sporting activities for locals, where young and old alike could go and keep fit.
So what do the usual nimbys do? They whinge and moan about it. Some people just don't realise how good they have it!

Probably the biggest problem with the new athletics track planned at Hazlemere is the close down time of 8.30pm which effectively means that those people who go out to work have no use of the track except at weekends. I am also quite sure that those people who do not have to go to work will use the track during daylight hours. This plan is not about providing athletes with the facilities they want but rather it is about cutting long term investment in sport by selling off sports fields to the highest bidder.

I understand that Handy Cross Runners (150 strong) jog from their meeting venue at Barry Close to use the current track on Wednesdays. Will they now jog to Hazlemere ?
The new track sounds excellent, but how much will it cost to run and maintain?

Just leave it where it is, hasn't caused a problem in the past and won't do either, that said, as John Ley above alludes, the Council won't be able to flog the land to big business then will they? That is what this is about after all.
