New allotment for Hazlemere as Bassetsbury Lane, Wycombe site stays closed

A NEW allotment is coming to High Wycombe after councillors acted to meet a “desperate” need for plots.

The 108 plot site at Queensway, off Amersham Road in Hazlemere, will be created to meet waits as long as three years, Wycombe District Council cabinet members agreed last night.

They also pledged to look into potential sites as Ashwells in Tylers Green, Castlefield Wood and the Desborough Castle extension.

And members signalled a major change in policy that councillors hope will increase plot numbers further.

The authority – which grants planning permission – will demand developers include allotments as part of housing plans.

It is hoped this will see land used for grow-your-own schemes at Abbey Barn South and Terriers Farm, controversially earmarked for housing by WDC.

Councillor David Carroll said: “People are desperate for allotments.”

A report said there was a “clear under-provision of allotment plots” with 176 waiting for WDC land and more for parish council facilities.

Bassetsbury Lane allotments is closed over contamination fears. The report (see link, bottom of story) says it would cost £45,000 to put right.

Yet councillor Tony Green, who led a review into demand, said the Hazlemere site was “not ideal” as demand is highest in the town.

But he said: “The rationale was to provide some new allotment space quickly.”

And he said of the policy move: “This is quite a change for this council. We now accept that allotment provision is something that should be sought within a site to be developed.

“That hasn’t happened for many years, if ever.”

The council report said the Queenway development is “sufficient to satisfy all existing demand”.

Some would only take up half a plot at the new site, which is owned by the council, the meeting was told.

The cabinet also agreed to spend £20,000 to prepare the site.

Allotment areas move out of the Town to make way for more housing?
WDC clearly stands for We Don't Care about the Town anymore.

Come on guys. Where would you prefer they built houses? Within towns/villages or on open fields/land?

Those who have seen their allotment closed down in bassetsbury because of the so called contamination scam are not going to rush up Hazlemere.
It is far better to have smaller allotments scattered around rather than this super allotment outside of the Town.
The trouble is all the housing is being dumped in the last few remaining green spaces in the town. The rural areas are not taking their fair share despite many villagers in rural areas who want new affordable homes built so that their offspring can stay in the area and keep the family support network.
The current policy being carried out by WDC is designed for short term votes by the ruling party and is not in the long term interests of the villages and small towns in the area who will see their local shops and businesses die.
The Conservatives think they can rely on the rural vote to ensure they maintain control of WDC.
Wycombe should be removed from the name of this Council because it is doing nothing for the community of Wycombe.

I understand from attending recent council meeting and listening to discussions that land was available in Wycombe Marsh area, to rear of retail park, but WDC refused to buy it-- Come on WDC spend some money and buy the land for the Town.

How about Wycombe Museum is re-located to the old Library building and the grounds of the Museum are given over to allotments? They could run courses in the house for people who want to learn how to "grow your own" and maybe run school visits to teach the next generation how to be self-sufficient. Refreshment and toilet facilities could be offered ..... a cut above your average allotment!!! Oh and how about a small garden shop selling seeds and tools, or the facility to sell surplus produce?

you selfish individual. These plots are provided by Wycombe District Council to the residents of the whole of Wycombe District. We'll all pay of them partly in our council tax, therefore we all have equal right to lease a plot.
If anything, those people living in all the new flats in the town without gardens (because Hazlemere wont have any) deserve a plot even more than others.

and what an ignorant individual you are, Hazlemere has had more flats/houses built on its land than many other "villages" in this area newbie, and now building work on the Wellesbourne campas has started there will be even more, get your facts straight!

If Hazlemere is a village so is , Sands and Wycombe Marsh -- Now they have had building!!!
Hazlemere along with Penn and Tylers Green are areas of that could easily take more homes without causing gridlock on the more Urban areas !!
