Osea Island: Development plans to give tourism boost

9:00am Sunday 30th December 2012

Employment and tourism have been handed a boost after plans to develop a remote island were given the green light.

Proposals to build eight pairs of semi-detached bungalows and cottages and one detached cottage on Osea Island were given the go ahead by Maldon District Council’s central area planning committee.

The blueprint, which also includes conversion of a barn into amenities including an indoor swimming pool, gym, shop and dining room, was amended after previously being withdrawn following concerns from council officers that it would not be in-keeping with the area.

Owner Nigel Frieda hopes the approval will enable the island in the River Blackwater to enhance its growing reputation for tourism.
