It will get built and start running. It will be expensive to use but if it benefits the tory fat cats then thats all they care about isnt it. Hopefully they will see sense and put back the Marlow to High Wycombe line next, here's hoping.

It suits all the politcal parties as any opposition to HS2 would cost them votes in the North. Anything that is done in the name of re-addressing the North-South divide is welcomed up there, regardless of any sense. If you told them that standing on one leg and singing Abba hits would make a difference to the supposed N/S divide they would do it.
.
Another thing ...
I don't see anything about getting the Scottish to pay for any extension north of Manchester.

geoffW, doesn't that only work with Abba songs if you sing them backwards?

The standing-room only carriages on the Japanese-built HS2 trains will discriminate against the disabled, and the German-only platform announcements north of Birmingham discriminate will against native travellers. It will be a real disaster for the country, but it's part of the plan so that China and Brazil can form a coalition to buy Britain in 25 years time.

This is winderful news for the Country as a whole.

Now we can confirm that we will not need a new airport runway for Heathrow. And now we will be able to save the building of a new airport again at Wing...it is still on the cards.

And with Mr C Gillan selling here house just a few days before the announcement was made (inside knowledge!) she has to go as well.

The High Speed Railway will not spoil the countryside as much as upgrading the motorways. And by the way we still need to upgrade the A34 to a full blooded motorway all from between Newbury and Nprthampton thus fulfilling the long lost Southampton to Northampton Motorway.

I'm still at a loss to understand the cross party consensus for a need for this. Is there something I'm missing?

The Marylebone - Birmingham train never seems that full to me. And if it was, why is adding more carriages not an easier answer? And if it needs to be faster, then upgrade the line? Got to be easier all round.

Besides, I thought we were broke?

You forgot:
May 2015 General Election
June 2015 New govt announced 'review' of project
June 2016 Review published, project cancelled.

I think a Heathrow expansion is now even more likely as people in Birmingham travel down to use London airports.

At least it means more jobs for the South at the expense of the Midlands. Now to get the next stretch down to take the jobs away from Manchester.

And as for what happens next, I think a revaluation of the cost is now in order. Given previous experience of Holyrood, Wembley and Olympics, I'd expect the cost to at least double before a line of track is laid.

Many of us will now join the chorus calling for Cheryl Gillan to resign.
She's let us down and acted shamefully, showing little integrity. Not so long ago she was shamed for claiming for pet food on her Commons expenses.
Then she backed opponents of the new rail route but caved in at the 11th hour to back the costly scheme which will spoil our countryside. She also wanted to toe the line with the rest of her Conservative party and desperately please colleagues there.
Now it seems she's quietly sold her Old Amersham home to get away from the nuisance rail line and says it's because of her old husband. She no longer has a home in our area.
She defended her own selfish interests but not the lives of her constituents who trusted her to be honest and decent in her dealings with them.
She faces all ways to satisfy all but has other motives.
Hypocrite, I say madam. Be gone with you. Voters must cast her out at the next election.
There have been other MPs like her in the past and they were swept away for their doubtful actions. We haven't forgotten her pet food bills too!
