MORE than 3,500 council staff will shift to web-based working in early 2012 as Google Apps for Business is introduced to computers.

Hillingdon is the first local authority to move to so-called ‘cloud computing’.

The borough aims to save around £3m, compared to maintaining the traditional desktop, over the next four years.

E-mails, calendars and documents will be accessed from a web browser, rather than through the usual software.

Staff will be able to access documents anywhere and at anytime and work together on documents in real time.

Advantages, like instant messaging, voice and video conferencing, will also help improve productivity and better internal collaboration.

The move will also reduce the carbon footprint by limiting the need for server space.
