Jermain Defoe’s cousin who died last week in a freak accident while on holiday in St Lucia was about to celebrate her 21st birthday.

Hannah Defoe, 20, from Enfield, was electrocuted on Wednesday, July 25, when she dived into a swimming pool on the Caribbean island.

She was due to turn 21 during her three-week holiday with her mother Janet.

Friends sent tweets to the performing arts student on Tuesday, July 24, saying they were going to miss her during her trip and were looking forward to seeing her when she returned as a 21-year-old.

A friend said: “Jst got my MissDefoe back & now she's leaving for 3 weeks to go St Lucia. See you when your 21.. Cheaaaa Buddy ❤

Twitter tributes have now started appearing on the young woman’s account.

A friend said: “R.I.P Hannah Defoe.. Just 20 Years Old MissDefoe I remember always seeing her about & thinking how beautiful she was! Life is too short!”

Another said: "Probably the most unreal surreal unbelievable moments of my life. I'd do anything for her. Anything to see her right now. Dunno what to say. love you Hannah x."

Her cousin, 29-year-old England and Tottenham Hotspur striker Defoe left his club’s pre-season tour of America early to join his family.

A Spurs statement said: "Jermain Defoe is to return home from our pre-season tour of the United States after receiving the tragic news of the death of his cousin Hannah Defoe while on holiday in St Lucia.

"Everyone at the club sends their sincere condolences to Jermain and his family and all our thoughts are with them at this sad time."

It has been reported that Miss Defoe’s mother was also taken to hospital after suffering an electric shock when trying to rescue her daughter from the pool.

Defoe flew home from England's Euro 2012 camp in Poland in June following the death of his 49-year-old father Jimmy from throat cancer.
