An Edmonton shopping centre got into the Olympic spirit on Friday by throwing its own opening ceremony.

A flag designed by 11-year-old Monet Stevens from Churchfield Primary School in Latymer Road, Edmonton, was hoisted into the concourse of Edmonton Green shopping centre in Market Square.

The budding artist designed the three-foot-high flag as part of a school competition run by the shopping centre over the last month.

The Mayor of Enfield Councillor Kate Anoule attended the event, which also saw performances from the Maracatudo Mafua Band, African Drumming London and cheerleading squad Enfield Blaze Allstars.

Britain’s Got Talent competitor Malaki and girlband Loaded Sista also took to the stage.

Centre manager Roger Allen said: “The evening was a huge success and we were thrilled to see so many people enjoying themselves and getting excited about the Olympics."
