Enfield Council spitting ban plan sent to Government for approval

Councillor Chris Bond, cabinet member for environment, said spitting was "a truly disgusting habit". Councillor Chris Bond, cabinet member for environment, said spitting was "a truly disgusting habit".

A ban on spitting in the borough could be introduced by next month after the council formally approached the Government for permission.

Enfield Council wants ministers to approve a by-law so that it can issue fines to those caught spitting, after more than 3,000 people signed a petition backing the idea.

If Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles approves the application, the ban will be enforced by the council's team of eight litter officers, who can issue £80 on-the-spot fines to those caught dropping rubbish.

The council started the campaign in October, but said it needed voters to sign a petition to convince Government ministers that the idea had support so it could impose a by-law.

Those backing the campaign, such as Enfield Over-50s Forum and Enfield Bangladeshi Society, argue that the practice is unhygienic and can spread disease.

The area of Ponders End near the defunct police station was covered with spit at tea time on Friday, so much scum around these days.
