A group of young drummers will perform at a national music competition next month.
The 13 students from Hazelwood Junior School in Palmers Green will play the samba drums at the Royal Festival Hall in the Southbank Centre on March 16.
Robin Lurie, music teacher at the school who has taught the children to drum since 2010, said: “In the competition there will be lots of choirs, but this lot actually stand out - and that’s me being objective.
“I think the judges will be surprised at the standard of these children.”
Mr Lurie, who used to play percussion professionally, said it is pleasing to help the children to play an instrument and see them take up something different.
He said the children, who are in Year 4, 5 and 6, are really excited about the competition, which will involve them playing the drums for about ten minutes.
The children practise the drums every Tuesday for an hour after school and during Thursday lunch times.
More than 1,200 musicians from across London will perform at the event, called Music for Youth.
