Edmonton couple married thirty years to raise £30,000 for breast cancer

A couple married for 30 years will stretch themselves to the limit this summer by raising £30,000 for breast cancer charities.

Tony Lambrou, 49, will run his seventh consecutive London marathon on April 22 and his wife, Antonia, 52, will walk part of the Great Wall of China at the beginning of May.

Mr Lambrou, who has already raised £27,000 for a variety of charities from running marathons, said he hopes his and his wife’s efforts will raise the money needed to hit £30,000.

Mrs Lambrou, who lost her younger sister to breast cancer, will raise money for Breast Cancer Care and Mr Lambrou will run for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The couple, of Petersfield Close in Edmonton, have started a gruelling training regime to ensure they are fit for the fundraising events.

Mr Lambrou has started running three to four times a week in preparation for the marathon, which he said will be his last.

Mrs Lambrou, who is a teacher for children with special needs at Oakthorpe Primary School, in Palmers Green, is walking four to five hours at a time to prepare.

Mr Lambrou said: “Breast cancer is a big thing in our family so the more money we raise will make us feel good. I’m just hoping we can get a cure for it.

“My wife is not walking the whole wall because it’s 10,000 miles long and I’d miss her.

She’s very much into her creature comforts, so this will be very difficult for her. I’m very proud of her.”

He said when he married his wife 30 years ago, he could never have expected they would be working together in this way to raise so much money for charity.

Mrs Lambrou will walk the Great Wall of China for nine days with 15 people all raising money for charity.
