A tearful Harry Redknapp has paid tribute to Spurs fans as he left court after being cleared of tax evasion charges.

The Tottenham boss walked free from Southwark Crown Court this morning after jurors accepted his denials that he had avoided tax on more than £189,000 found in a bank account he held in Monaco.

Speaking outside the court, he thanked fans who sung his name at a match on January 31, saying: “The Wigan game was the most moving I've ever felt. For me personally, to have the fans singing my name throughout the game while all this was going on, that will always be special to me and I will never forget that.”

He also thanked his family, who he said had “really pulled through it these last five years that this has been hanging over us”.

He added: “It really has been a nightmare – this is a case that should never have come to court. It's unbelievable, really.”

His acquittal alongside co-defendant Milan Mandaric ends a five-year £8 million police investigation that failed to yield a single conviction.
