Winchmore Hill school "extremely disappointed" by malicious Twitter comments

An Enfield school has released a statement saying it is “extremely disappointed” with malicious comments left on networking website Twitter by former and current pupils.

The tweets, written under the hashtag #OnlyAtWinchmore, led to Winchmore School, in Winchmore Hill, trending throughout London between 11pm and 2am last night.

The tweets included comments about teachers' clothing and rumours surrounding the sacking of teachers.

The school, which has 1,470 students in years 7 to 13, released a statement today. It said: "Following an attempt to become a top twitter feed by some of our students, the school is extremely disappointed that this resulted in a number of malicious comments by some contributors.

"We are dealing internally with the few students who have let themselves and the school down by posting inappropriate comments.

"However, we have been unable to respond to the unfounded and upsetting statements placed by others who are not part of our school community."

According to today’s tweets, an assembly to discuss the offensive comments was delivered to pupils this morning.

The statement added that the school is "justifiably proud" of its academic achievements and being recognised for its strong sense of community.

This all began as just lighthearted bit of humour and was blown completely out of proportion by people that did not even attend the school. It is really unfair that the school and the student's reputation has been harmed in this way. The majority of the students are very apologetic and did not mean any malice behind their words. Winchmore is a fantastic school and has earned it's great reputation through solid academic achievements. I am proud to be a Winchmore student.
