Men and women wearing high heels walked through Enfield town centre yesterday to raise awareness of domestic violence.
The mile-long walk, which started at the Civic Centre in Silver Street, was to mark White Ribbon Day, an annual campaign to stop domestic violence against women.
About 40 councillors, professionals and partners attended the walk, including the director of the National White Ribbon Campaign UK, Chris Green, who was wearing a pair of leopard print kitten heels.
Shan Kilby, domestic violence co-ordinator at Enfield Council, who organised the event, said: “Men had to ask friends and family and look anywhere they might be able to pick up a pair of large heels - that it is part of the fun of these events.”
She said Mr Green looked very striking in his heels and was much better at walking in them than she was.
She added: “One of the nice things that came from the walk is that people in Enfield were interested in what we are doing to stop domestic violence.”
A number of victims of domestic abuse approached the walkers and thanked them for raising awareness of the issue.
Councillor Christine Hamilton, cabinet member for community safety, who took part in the walk, said: “I am delighted to continue to support the White Ribbon Day events which send out a clear message that all forms of violence against women, like domestic violence, will not be tolerated.
“The march is a wonderful way to send out the message – to meet others and have fun too.”
