Boris Johnson launches first mayoral academy scheme at Turin Grove


LONDON mayor Boris Johnson praised the "energy and enthusiasm" of staff and pupils at Turin Grove school this morning, which is set to become one of the capital's first mayoral academies this autumn.

The school was one of three in Enfield to be named on a Government hitlist of failing schools in 2008, and will be receive part of an £8m pot of funding from the London Development Agency (LDA) in a bid to improve academic standards and the employability of children leaving the school.

Gladys Aylward School, two miles away and also in Edmonton, which Mr Johnson is also visiting today, is set to be the second mayoral academy out of a proposed ten.

Mr Johnson, who saw pupils making a papier mache whale in art class and recontructing a crime scene in english, said: "I'm thoroughly impressed by the enthusiam of the pupils here. I want to use the energy here and power of the LDA and the local community. It is not a done deal yet - we have to wait until this is signed off by Government. But we are here to give support and build on the school's great achievements."
