Educational garden planned for every Enfield child

GREEN fingered youngsters are being asked to design the borough’s first outdoor classroom.

The space will be a child-friendly garden which can be used by all the borough’s children and will be full of things to learn about and look after.

Science, weather, art and photography can all be studied in the garden, as well as a range of wildlife.

It is hoped the plan, which will be launched on Friday, will especially benefit those who do not have gardens of their own.

Children from Churchfield School, Latymer Road, Edmonton, and guide groups have been advising garden design students from Capel Manor College on what would make the best garden.

The students have until March 20 to submit the designs. After that pupils on the Churchfield School council will select the winning entry.

Enfield councillor Glynis Vince, cabinet member for education, children’s services and youth, said: “This is an excellent scheme that brings a new dimension to teaching and learning, providing a lot of fun at the same time.”

The council is working with construction companies Fitzpatrick Highway Services, the REAM Partnership and the John Laing Charitable Trust to create the garden, which should be ready in June.

As well as financial help and advice, children will learn about construction and energy management from them.

REAM is also donating a remote weather station and bird box web cam so that schools can get a first hand glimpse of garden activity.

Julie Phipps, senior gardener at Capel Manor, said the project will bring students and schools together in an exciting way.

She added: “I am thrilled that our design students will be taking a design brief from the Churchfield pupils. Thanks to the council and local companies we shall have a great outdoor classroom.”
