A NEW programme to tackle gang violence between Enfield and Haringey kicks off this week.

Just North, funded by the Metropolitan Police Authority, will be holding MC and song writing classes with house and garage artist MC Creed from October 21 to November 18.

The aim of the scheme is to engage young people in after-school and weekend activities to reduce youth crime and anti-social behaviour in the Upper Edmonton and Lower Tottenham areas.

Event co-ordinator Kirk Hudson, 29, said: "I got involved with this project because I could see what was happening in these two areas.

"There was a lack of activities, especially free activities, that were accessible to young people, so I thought this would be a really positive way to help."

Young people on the course will learn how to devise positive lyrics for songs and will then perform to a panel of judges, including MC Creed and R&B artist Young Nate.

The winner will record their track with music producer Duane Flames and hear it played on local or national radio.

The MC course is the first in a series of projects organised by Haringey Community and Police Consultative Group and Enfield Community Police Partnership, in association with the Metropolitan Police Authority.

It will take place at Angel Community Centre, in Raynham Road, Edmonton, where free food and drink will be provided.

Over the next six weeks youngsters from Enfield and Haringey, aged 14 to 16, will also have the chance to take martial arts lessons, play indoor five-aside football, take drama classes and attend a careers fair.

Places are still available on all the courses, which are free to join.
