The former Radlett Fire Station could be converted into homes after it was sold by Hertfordshire County Council.

A council representative confirmed contracts were exchanged between Hertfordshire Fire Authority and property developer Beechwood Homes Ltd on January 25.

It is thought the sale is dependent on planning permission being granted to allow development of the Watling Street site.

The retained fire station was closed in 2006 – a decision which sparked anger among the town’s residents.

More than 7,000 people signed a petition in 2007 to have the station reopened and, more recently, a campaign was launched to keep the building for community use.

The county’s fire authority though stood by its decision and now looks set to off load the vacant building.
