Members of a ju-jitsu club were challenged to throw each other as many times as possible to raise money for charity last night.
Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu club of Borehamwood, based at the Hertswood Centre, Potters Lane, did the sponsored Throwathon to raise money for Help for Heroes.
Members of the club aged 13 to 16 paired up for the 30 minute challenge with each pair managing 350 throws, or 175 per student.
Amber Gill, 15, from Elstree, who took part in the Throwathon, said: “It was actually really fun event to do, even with the couple of extra bruises I’ve got.
“I think the whole Throwathon is a great idea and gives us the chance to give support to people in the armed forces when they come home.
“I’m really proud of what we did and the whole class worked really hard all for a good cause.”
The campaign to raise money is talking place at clubs all over Hertfordshire and the east of England, and last year the Throwathon managed to raise a total of £20,738 for the charity, a total which the club hopes to beat this year.
Founder of the club Professor Kevin Pell said: “The club has a lot of members who are from the armed forces, we even had a dojo in Camp Bastion in Afghanistan last year, and because of our military connection we felt it was important to show them some support and raise money for them.”
“The more support we can give our armed forces the better at the moment, especially with all that is going on in the world.”
The Throwathon will continue during this week and with the final session taking place on Saturday after which all sponsorship money will be collected.
