Headteacher in intensive care after rugby tackle

A headteacher is in intensive care after injuring his spine while playing rugby.

Paul Sutton, principal of Greig City Academy in Hillfield Avenue, Hornsey, was playing for the Saracens Veterans, when he was injured during a scrum against the Harlequin Amateurs on Saturday.

The 46-year-old father-of-two was taken by ambulance to Charing Cross Hospital where doctors assessed the extent of his injuries. Treatment is expected to last several weeks.

Tom Peryer, chairman of the governing body of Greig City, where Mr Sutton has been principal since September, said: "We wish him a speedy and complete recovery and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family during this trying time for them.

"In the short time Paul has been principal, he has won the confidence of staff, governors and inspectors."

Mr Sutton, who played front row forward for the Saracens Amateur First 15, was injured during an away game.

A spokesman for the club said: "We are keeping in close contact with Paul's wife and family and offering them all the support they need."
